Before I write about Microsoft Virtual PC, I would like you to know about some basic concepts like Virtual Machine, The Host Operating System and the guest Operating System.
What is a Virtual Machine?
Virtual menas not real. A Virtual machine is a software implmentation of a computer system which executes like a real machine. A virtual machine provides a complete system platform to execute an Operating System. It means it act as a real machine containg an operating system which indeed executes a appliction software.
Virtual machine are used to execute another operating system within a host operating system. It mean one can use linux under windows enviroment.
Host Operating System :
It is the operating System in which the Virtual machine runs. It is the main operating system.
Guest Operating System :
It is the operating system which runs under the virtual machine.
How it works?
There are many softwares available in market. Many of them are open source so one can modify it according to his needs.
Examples of such softwares are :
Virtual Box
Virtual PC
Dos Box etc
To create a virtual machine one must install one of these softwares. I will tell you how to use the Microsoft Virtual PC to install a different Operating System.
When the user is working in the Guest OS, all the system calls of the Guest OS are converted to compatible system calls of Host OS. This creates an illusion as if the user is using a real machine.
Installing Microsoft Virtual PC :
Before you install downoad the setup.exe from Microsoft`s website. Or it is also available on various software websites. Click on the installtion file and follow the instructions. Once Your software is installed open it.
